UCSB graduate students may now apply to become teaching assistants (TAs) for the introduction to data science classes (CMPSC 5A and CMPSC 5B) in Winter 2023. Prospective TAs must be available from January 8, 2023 through March 24, 2023, which is which is when final grades are due to the Office of the Registrar. The deadline for applications is 5 pm on Thursday, November 17.  

TA positions are for 50% time (20 hours/week). All students must be registered in courses (12 units recommended) before applying in order to be eligible for a student employment position and to receive fee remission (once hiring is finalized in September).  

Although housed in the Computer Science Department, and TAs will be hired through CS, these introductory data science courses are open to students across campus. The classes are meant to impart the basics of Python programming and data analysis to everyone, regardless of major or prior experience.

2022-2023 will be the third year that Intro to Data Science is taught in the Computer Science Department. CMPSC 5A was listed as CMPSC 90DA in 2020-2021. The course was taught through Interdisciplinary Studies (INT 5) in Fall 2018 and Fall 2019. Sharon Solis, the current instructor, has taught Intro to Data Science since Winter 2021.
