UCSB graduate students may now apply to become teaching assistants (TAs) for the introduction to data science classes (CMPSC 5A and CMPSC 5B) in Spring 2024. Prospective TAs must be available from April 1st, 2024 to June 14th, 2024, which is when final grades are due to the Office of the Registrar. The deadline for applications is 5 pm on Tuesday, February 6th.  

TA positions are for 50% time (20 hours/week). All students must be registered in courses (12 units recommended) before applying in order to be eligible for a student employment position and to receive fee remission (once hiring is finalized in December).  

Although housed in the Computer Science Department, and TAs will be hired through CS, these introductory data science courses are open to students across campus. The classes are meant to impart the basics of Python programming and data analysis to everyone, regardless of major or prior experience.

2023-2024 will be the fourth year that Intro to Data Science is taught in the Computer Science Department. CMPSC 5A was listed as CMPSC 90DA in 2020-2021. The course was taught through Interdisciplinary Studies (INT 5) in Fall 2018 and Fall 2019.
